Qualified Electronic Signatures and Seals

main

Electronic signatures and seals are data in electronic form, which is attached to or logically associated with other data in electronic form to ensure the latter’s origin and integrity.

As defined by the eIDAS Regulation, in order to be defined as "qualified" electronic signatures and seals must be affixed by a device designed for their creation, over which the signatory must be under his sole control, and must be based on qualified certificates issued by a Qualified Trust Service Provider.
Qualified electronic signatures and seals have a "strong" probative effect, as they are able to demonstrate the unique connection between the signatory and the signature or seal used.

A qualified electronic signature has an equivalent legal effect of a handwritten signature, and a qualified electronic seal enjoy the presumption of integrity of the data and of correctness of the origin of that data to which is linked.

Their main characteristics are:

  • European validity;

  • use of a certificate issued by a Qualified Trust Service Provider;

  • high reliability and technological safety;

  • probative effectiveness equal to that of a handwritten signature;

  • use via cryptographic token, smart card, remote signature or seal.

Entaksi provides qualified electronic signatures and seals via USB tokens.

Time Stamps

A qualified electronic time stamp, or timestamp, is able to link the date and time to the data to which it is applied, so as to exclude subsequent modifications and manipulations. The timestamp is able to prove the existence of electronic data at the moment in which it is connected to them, through the application of a signature or an advanced electronic seal.

The qualified timestamps provided by Entaksi meet the eIDAS requirements (art. 42 Regulation) and guarantee the electronic documents:

  • inalterability;

  • legal validity;

  • international legal recognition.

The accuracy of timestamps provided by Entaksi is of 1 second or better of UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).

The time is synchronized with NTP servers provided by the National Institute of Metrological Research, a body designated by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures.

Long-Term Preservation

main

Long-term preservation of qualified electronic signatures and seals allows extending the reliability of qualified electronic signatures and seals beyond the technological validity period, in order to guarantee their legal validity in the long term, ensuring that they can be validated independently of future technological changes.

This qualified service acquires the validation proofs of signatures and seals at the time of deposit, and generates validation reports linked to the documents to which they apply, also taking care of extending their validity over time by carrying out periodic renewals of the timestamps applied to the archival information packages.

The long-term preservation profile provided by Entaksi supports a preservation scheme consisting of:

  • WST storage model (With Storage);

  • preservation goals:

    • PGD (Preservation of General Data);

    • PDS (Preservation of Digital Signature);

    • AUG (Augmentation).

Combined with the other qualified services, long-term conservation guarantees the attributes of confidentiality, authenticity, immutability, integrity and usability of the IT documents or data being preserved.
